Remembering Essex’s Only Long-Term Heavy Bomber Base

Once home to the 90 Squadron RAF and the 381st Bomb Group USAAF during World War II, the museum boasts a growing collection of artifacts and exhibits, many of which are housed in what was once part of the base hospital.

Preserving History: Discover the Legacy of Ridgewell Airfield

Located in North Essex, the Ridgewell Airfield Museum is dedicated to preserving the rich history of this significant site, which once served as home to both the 90 Squadron RAF and the 381st Bomb Group USAAF during World War II.

Our museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the brave men and women who served here, with a growing collection of artifacts, stories, and exhibits that bring the past to life.

Housed in the historic Ward Number Two of the former base hospital, our museum provides a unique opportunity to explore the heritage of Ridgewell Airfield and its role in shaping the course of history.

From rare military artifacts to personal stories of wartime service, our exhibits highlight the sacrifices made by those who served on these grounds.

“Although I flew out of other combat airfields far distant from England, none was burned as deeply into my memory as Ridgewell… to me, this was ground as hallowed as Lincoln’s Gettysburg.”

-John Comer
Engineer and top turret gunner, 533rd Bomb Squadron, 381st Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, United States Army Air Forces.
